Speech Therapy

When I started speech therapy, I was a mess. I had aphasia. “Aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage in a specific area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension. Aphasia leaves a person unable to communicate effectively with others.” I remember when I was in the hospital saying I needed my socks. I kept saying “I need my socks, I need my socks” and I would motion to brush my hair. Really, I need to brush my hair but it was coming out of my mouth that I needed socks. This is what aphasia is. I would say I've gotten 83% of my speech back, there are still some tougher words and comprehension pieces that are missing.

When we go to the grocery store or to the spa, no one bats an eye. I've had people tell me that I'm doing great and that my speech is not affected at all. If they would have seen me in August, I think they would think a lot differently. I'm so proud of myself and where I've come.

Matt is hilarious. There's no other way to put it. I got spoiled with donuts showing up to therapy. Yes, he brought me donuts! And we play Mancala, which if you don't know what Mancala is you need to go buy it from the store right now! “The mancala games are a family of two-player turn-based strategy board games played with small stones, beans, or seeds and rows of holes or pits in the earth, a board, or other playing surface. The objective is usually to capture all or some set of the opponent's pieces.” It is such a fun game! I would have to say 5 words that started with the letter M or name 5 movies before I could go. So, it became something really exciting for us to do and I wouldn't have it any other way.

THANK YOU MATT!
